Timer is provided for allowing a teacher to control the absence of a student in a classroom. The timing device has a main body for mounting the timing device in the classroom, at least one signal member located on the main body and arranged to actuate a signal to indicate to the teacher at a predetermined time and an activation and marker member. The student removes the activation and marker member when leaving the class room thus activating the timer and places the marker on the students desk for identification. If the student returns in good time, the student on return replaces the marker on the body thus deactivating the timer on the main body. If the student is overtime, the timer times out to actuate the signal if the marker is not returned within a predetermined time. A first light indicates when a student is absent. A second signals if the student is overtime.
