A method of measuring the absolute concentration of nicotine metabolites in urine to asses smoking habit, involves measuring the urine concentration by measuring the absorbance or reflectance of light by the urine sample at least one wavelength between 400 nm and 650 nm. The actual concentration of said nicotine metabolites in a sample of urine is also measured and then the actual concentration is compared with the urine concentration so as to derive the absolute concentration of said nicotine metabolites.
