A system for reducing ground pressure for heavy equipment comprising ground covering plates, and a plate grabber for handling the plates. Each ground covering plate has a grabber receiving opening. The plate grabber comprises a frame for pivotal connection with a transporting vehicle, a pair of slide plates slidably attached to the frame each of the slide plates includes a tongue adapted to slide under the plate at the plate opening, actuator means for moving the slide plates outwardly to secure to the frame for subsequent transport and positioning.
