A method and system for generating authority score ranking to a plurality of linked documents is provided. The method uses a linear or nonlinear authority score function that takes in the feature vectors of the documents and a set of parameters. The system generates feature vectors for the documents. The method updates the parameters for each of the documents, for which an update on a document is based on the score of the document, the scores of one or more predecessors of the document, and some scalar signals. Finally, the authority score assigned to a document is computed from the score function using the feature vector of the document and the set of parameters. The method and system is particularly useful in reducing memory requirement, improving computation efficiency, providing generalization among similar documents, and scaling with the size of databases for authority ranking of large corpuses of documents, such as ranking of web pages.
