A drive wheel (10) for travelling over a surface comprising a support member (12), a wheel member (11) and a drive shaft (24). The drive shaft (26) has a drive means engaging a drive surface on the wheel member to rotatably drive the wheel member relative to the support member. The drive shaft (24) also has a longitudinal axis and the engagement of the drive means and drive surface define in vertical cross section a line of engagement that is at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis. The wheel member (11) has a tread portion (28) extending about its periphery and positioned such that it is intersected by the line of engagement substantially where it contacts the surface. A chassis for vehicles such as wheel chairs having one or more drive wheels according to the invention is also described.
L'invention concerne une roue d'entraînement (10) destinée à se déplacer sur une surface et comprenant un élément de support (12), un élément de roue (11) et un arbre d'entraînement (24). L'arbre d'entraînement (26) présente un moyen d'entraînement venant au contact d'une surface d'entraînement sur l'élément de roue afin de faire tourner ledit élément de roue par rapport à l'élément de support. L'arbre d'entraînement (24) comprend également un axe longitudinal et le contact du moyen d'entraînement et de la surface d'entraînement définit, en coupe verticale, une ligne de contact formant un angle aigu avec l'axe longitudinal. L'élément de roue (11) présente une partie bande de roulement (28) s'étendant autour de sa périphérie et positionnée de manière qu'elle est entrecoupée par la ligne de contact sensiblement où elle vient au contact de la surface. Un châssis pour véhicule tel que des fauteuils roulants présentant une ou plusieurs roues d'entraînement selon l'invention est également décrit.
