Porous fluoropolymer films, such as PTFE films, formed by a method comprising the steps of (a) forming a fluoropolymer (e.g., PTFE) paste (10), (b) extruding, calendaring, or otherwise processing the paste to form a film extrudate (12), (c) causing the film extrudate to be calendared in a first directional axis (14), (d) subsequently calendaring the film extrudate in a second directional axis which is different form the first directional axis (16), (e) subsequently calendaring the film extrudate in at least one additional direction axis which is different from said first and second directional axes, thereby forming a multiaxially calendared film extrudate (18), (f) drying the multiaxially calendared film extrudate (20), and (g) radially expanding the multiaxially calendared film extrudate (22) to form a radially oriented fluoropolymer (e.g., PTFE) film. The porous fluoropolymer films formed by this method are multiaxially oriented and exhibit isotropic strength properties.

Cette invention concerne des films de fluoropolymère poreux, tel que des films de PTFE, lesquels sont obtenus grâce à un procédé comprenant les étapes suivantes: (a) former une pâte d'un fluoropolymère (par exemple, de PTFE); (b) extruder, calandrer ou traiter cette pâte d'une autre façon de manière à obtenir un extrudât de film; (c) calandrer l'extrudât de film selon un premier axe directionnel; (d) calandrer l'extrudât de film selon un deuxième axe directionnel différent du premier; (e) calandrer ensuite l'extrudât de film selon un ou plusieurs axes directionnels complémentaires qui soient différents du premier et du deuxième axes, ceci de manière à former un extrudât de film calandré selon des axes multiples; (f) sécher l'extrudât de film calandré selon des axes multiples; et enfin (g), étirer radialement l'extrudât de film calandré selon des axes multiples, ceci de manière à former un film de fluoropolymère (par exemple, de PTFE) à orientation radiale. Les films de fluoropolymère poreux formés d'après ce procédé possèdent une orientation multiaxiale ainsi que des propriétés de résistance isotropique.
