ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A modular apparatus is provided which combines the advantages of a total hip prosthesis with the superior fixation of an interlocking intramedullary nail. The apparatus includes an intramedullary rod, a separate prosthetic, generally spherical surface member for forming the exterior of the femoral head, and means for securing the rod to the prosthetic surface. The prosthetic surface member may be a total hip prosthesis or a femoral head resurfacing or replacement member.
