Abstract A continuously variable traction drive having a torque input friction member and a torque output friction member, each friction member having a rotary friction surface, at least one idler member with friction surfaces that engage the friction surfaces of the torque input and torque output members to establish a frictional driving connection between the input member and the output member, a traction torque transmitting contact area at an interface of the idler member with each friction member, the location of the contact area being variable as the torque ratio changes so that a tangent line at the contact area intersects the axes of rotation of the input and output members at the point of intersection of the axes whereby the efficiency of the drive is improved because of the elimination of tangential spin forces at the contact area.-
