ABSTRACT Disclosed herein is a design system for designing, dynamically changing and displaying design drawings. The invention allows a user to select a solid object from a display as the current, active object. The user then selects a surface to present in the foreground. The system then modifies the display data structure to accentuate the foreground surface by modifying the illumination of individual pixels. This technique gives the effect of shading areas on the display to highlight important characteristics of the drawing. Nov. 26, 1990 SA9-90-086
