A process for the isomerization of alpha olefins to internal olefins is disclosed. The process is selective in that when both vinylidene olefins and alpha olefins are present in the feed or reaction mixture, only the alpha olefins are isomerized substantially in the absence of isomerization of the vinylidene olefins to trisubstituted olefins. The catalysts employed in the process are ruthenium trihalides, preferably RuCl3, RuBr3, and/or hydrated forms of these ruthenium trihalides.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant l'isomérisation d'alpha oléfines avec des oléfines internes. Ce procédé est sélectif en ce sens que lorsque les oléfines de vinylidène et les alpha oléfines sont toutes deux présentes dans la charge ou dans le mélange réactionnel, seules les alpha oléfines sont sensiblement isomérisées, sans isomérisation conjointe des oléfines de vinylidènes avec des oléfines trisubstituées. Les catalyseurs utilisés dans ce procédé sont des trihalogénures de ruthénium, de préférence RuCl¿3?, RuBr¿3?, et/ou des formes hydratées de ces trihalogénures de ruthénium.
