The present invention relates to an enzymatically generated iodine microbicide for the inactivation of pathogenic organisms that are contaminants in or on sensitive biological materials such as the human eye. The biocidal agent from the enzymatic reaction is free molecular iodine which is generated at a minimum level of 5 ppm and comprises at least 25 % of the total iodine species present on a molar basis.
