Inexpensive, environment-friendly, non-polluting method and apparatus for heat treating steel, utilizing a coolant having a high heat transfer coefficient. The method of heat treating steel, wherein austenized steel is cooled by immersing the same in a coolant, comprising using a mixture of solid particles and water as the coolant, the solid particles being precipitated into the water, the steel being preferably cooled by passing the same through a precipitate layer, the solid particles being preferably oxides or graphite powder and preferably fluidized. The apparatus for heat treating steel, wherein steel is immersed in a coolant vessel, the coolant vessel being provided with a liquid vessel in which water is stored and a solid particle vessel partitioned by mesh in the liquid vessel and charged with solid particles, the mesh being formed so as to have mesh openings smaller than a diameter of the solid particles. The apparatus of another mode for heat treating steel, charged with solid particles and water as coolants, comprising a means for supplying water forcibly among the solid particles, and preferably a solid particle fluidizing means as well.

L'invention porte sur un procédé et un appareil de traitement thermique de l'acier peu coûteux, favorables à l'environnement, non polluants, recourant à un réfrigérant à fort coefficient de transfert thermique. Ledit procédé consiste à immerger l'acier austénitisé dans le réfrigérant composé d'un mélange d'eau et de particules solides y étant précipitées en faisant passer de préférence l'acier dans une couche de précipité, les particules solides consistant de préférence en oxydes ou graphite pulvérulent de préférence fluidisés. L'appareil où se fait l'immersion comporte une cuve d'eau et une cuve de particules solides séparée de la cuve d'eau par des mailles d'un diamètre inférieur à celui des particules solides. Dans une variante l'appareil peut comporter un moyen d'introduction forcée d'eau dans les particules solides, et de préférence, un moyen de fluidisation des particules solides.
