A satellite communications system provides a communications service to a mobile terminal (2) on which different communications applications (4a to 4d) may be run. Calls are set up between any of the applications (4a to 4d) via a satellite (12) to a network management centre (18) which provides different service adaptors (20a to 20d) which adapt the calls to different types of service provided over terrestrial networks (22), such as telephony, facsimile, internet or ATM services. The bandwidth allocated to each call over the satellite link may be varied during the call according to demand either from the relevant application (4) or from the network management centre (18). Multiple calls may be connected concurrently to or from different applications running on the mobile terminal. A maximum bandwidth is allocated to each call. Efficient use is thereby made of the limited bandwidth available over the satellite (12), according to the instantaneous bandwidth requirements of different applications (4). For real- time calls requiring multiple slots per frame in a TDMA channel, the slots are mutually spaced apart to reduce delay.
Un système de communications par satellite fournit un service de communications à un terminal mobile (2), sur lequel différentes applications de communications (4a à 4d) peuvent tourner. Les appels sont établis entre n'importe quelle des applications (4a à 4d) par l'intermédiaire d'un satellite (12) à un centre de gestion de réseau (18) qui fournit différents adaptateurs de service (20a à 20d) qui adaptent les appels aux différents types de services offerts par les réseaux terrestres (22), comme les services de téléphonie, de télécopie, d'Internet ou d'ATM. La largeur de bande allouée à chaque appel sur la liaison par satellite peut varier pendant l'appel, en fonction de la demande par l'application pertinente (4) ou par le centre de gestion du réseau (18). Plusieurs appels peuvent être connectés simultanément, en provenance ou à destination de différentes applications qui tournent sur le terminal mobile. Une largeur de bande maximale est allouée à chaque appel. On utilise donc la largeur de bande limitée offerte par le satellite (12) de façon efficace, conformément aux exigences de largeurs de bandes instantanées des différentes applications (4). Pour des appels en temps réel qui demandent plusieurs créneaux par séquence AMRT, les créneaux sont mutuellement espacés afin de réduire les délais.
