The present invention concerns a novel method for identifying a bacterial strain capable of utilising Thaxtomin A as a source of nitrogen and the use of such a bacterial strain alone or in combination with other such bacterial strain or strains for controlling common scab of root and tuber food crops, preferably potato, without adversely affecting same. Specifically, an isolate of Streptomyces scabies strain EF-50 (ATCC 55966) or Streptomyces scabies strain EF-73 (ATCC 55967) or Burholderia pickettii strain S-2016 (ATCC 55968), alone or in combination, in an agricultural composition, can be used to control common scab of potato without adversely affecting same.
