- 25 - WATER TREATMENT APPARATUS AND METHOD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for the treatment of water in a single unit is provided which comprises the steps of successively passing the water through five discrete layers of ion exchange resin. The first layer comprises a relatively nonporous anion exchange resin for removing organically bound iron and free organic matter exhibiting a relatively strong anionic charge from the water. The second layer comprises a macroporous free base resin for removing foreign matter exhibiting relatively weaker anionic charges remaining in the water after passage through the first layer. The third layer comprises a macroporous anion exchange resin in hydroxide form for removing H2S gas from the water. The fourth layer comprises an asymmetric sodium aluminosilicate resin for filtering the water and raising the pH of the water and the fifth layer comprises a water softening resin.
