A method and apparatus for ensuring against explosion of the gaseous atmosphere of a closed chamber, such as the QDCD room of an internal turret of an offshore production and offloading buoy wherein the closed chamber has production risers and conduit connectors that represent a potential source of flammable gas. The method comprises mixing and diluting the oxidant content of the air by introducing within the closed chamber a sufficient quantity of inert gas to render the mixture of the air and any flammable gas noncombustible regardless of the flammable gas content of the mixture. The method includes removal of the non-combustible mixture of air and any flammable gas from the closed chamber by purging thereof to the natural atmosphere, while introducing inert gas, thereby leaving a substantially inert atmosphere within said substantially closed chamber. The turret system provides for control of the gaseous atmosphere within the closed chamber at all modes of turret operation, including the idle, on-line and ventilation modes and also provides for gas pressure control to accommodate normal operating conditions and conditions of gas leakage into the chamber.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil assurant une protection contre l'explosion de l'atmosphère gazeuse d'un local clos tel qu'un local d'accouplement / de désaccouplement rapides (QCDC) d'une tourelle interne d'une bouée offshore de production et de déchargement, le local clos comportant des colonnes de production et des raccords de conduites qui représentent une source potentielle de gaz inflammable. Le procédé consiste à mélanger et à diluer le comburant contenu dans l'air par l'introduction dans le local clos un quantité suffisante d'un gaz inerte pour rendre non combustible le mélange de l'air et de n'importe quel gaz inflammable, indépendamment de la proportion du gaz inflammable dans le mélange. Le procédé consiste à évacuer du local clos le mélange non combustible de l'air et de n'importe quel gaz inflammable et à l'éjecter dans l'atmosphère environnante tout en introduisant du gaz inerte, ce qui a pour effet de créer une atmosphère sensiblement inerte à l'intérieur de ce local sensiblement clos. Le système de tourelle permet de contrôler l'atmosphère gazeuse à l'intérieur de la chambre close dans n'importe quel mode de fonctionnement de la tourelle, y compris les modes repos, en ligne et ventilation; il permet aussi d'adapter la commande de la pression de gaz aux conditions de fonctionnement normales comme aux conditions de fuite de gaz à l'intérieur du local.
