The invention relates to packet radio networks and particularly to controlling operating states of a mobile station in a packet radio network. A mobile station (MS) has an active state and a standby state. In the active state, the mobile station performs data transmission and updates its location more often than in the standby state. The mobile station changes from the active state to the standby state if there is no data transmission during a predetermined period. The packet radio network (SGSN) may also direct, if required, the mobile station (MS) from the active state to the standby state. According to the invention, the mobile station (MS) transmits to the packet radio network a short pseudo data packet either before the timer expires or in response to a command transmitted by the packet network to change the state (GO STANDBY) when the mobile station wants to stay in the active state.
L'invention se rapporte à des réseaux de radiocommunications par paquets et plus particulièrement à la commande d'états de fonctionnement d'un poste mobile dans un tel réseau. Un poste mobile (MS) présente un état actif et un état d'attente. Dans son état actif, il effectue la transmission de données et met à jour les informations relatives à son emplacement plus souvent qu'en état d'attente. Il passe de l'état actif à l'état d'attente s'il ne se produit pas de transmission de données pendant une période prédéterminée. Le réseau de radiocommunications par paquets (SGSN) peut également faire passer, le cas échéant, le poste mobile (MS) de l'état actif à l'état d'attente. Selon l'invention, lorsque le poste mobile souhaite demeurer à l'état actif, il transmet au réseau de radiocommunications par paquets un court pseudo-paquet de données, soit avant que l'horloge n'indique que le temps est écoulé, soit en réponse à une commande de changement d'état (PASSER EN ATTENTE) transmise par le réseau.
