A process for preparing noble metal catalysts which comprise at least one noble metal of the platinum metal group and/or compounds thereof as catalytically active component and, if desired, promoters and/or modifiers on a carbon-containing support material is provided. In this process, the carbon-containing support material is treated with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of organic or inorganic acids prior to the application of the catalytically active noble metal components and, if desired, promoters and/or modifiers. The catalysts obtained can be successfully used in, in particular, the preparation of substituted or unsubstituted cyclohexanones by hydrogenation of the correspondingly substituted phenols.
