A pharmaceutical composition that can be used to treat viral infections, particularly HIV. The composition comprises from about 250 mg to about 6000 mg of a benzimidazole derivative of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable organic or inorganic addition salt thereof, wherein X is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl of less than 7 carbon atoms or alkoxy of less than 7 carbon atoms; n is a positive integer of less than 4; Y is hydrogen, chlorine, nitro, oxychloro, methyl or ethyl; R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and R2 is 4-thiazolyl. The preferred compound is thiabendazole. In the present invention it has been discovered that the compounds described above are useful for the inhibition of HIV and the treatment of HIV infection when used alone or in combination with other anti-viral agents. These compositions can prevent replication of the HIV virus, prevent creation of virus strains that are resistant to treatment with benzimidazoles, prevent or delay infection of cells with HIV virus and delay reappearance of the virus in the treated cells. These compositions are also effective against hepatitis and viruses such as herpes, influenza and rhinoviruses.
La présente invention concerne une composition pharmaceutique pouvant être utiliséee pour le traitement des infections virales, en particulier du VIH. Cette composition comprend de 250 à 600 mg environ d'un dérivé de benzimidazole possédant la formule suivante (I) ou bien un sel d'addition organique ou inorganique du dit composé, où X est hydrogène, halogène, alkyle avec moins de sept atomes de carbone ou alkoxy avec moins de sept atomes de carbone; n est un entier positif inférieur à 4; Y est hydrogène, chlorure, nitro, oxychloro, méthyle ou éthyle; R est hydrogène ou un groupe alkyle ayant de 1 à 8 atomes de carbone et R¿2? est 4-thiazolyle. Le composé préféré est le thiabendazole. Dans le cadre de la présente invention, on a découvert que les composés décrits ci-dessus, utilisés seuls ou en combinaison avec d'autres agents antiviraux, jouaient un rôle utile dans l'inhibition du VIH et le traitement de l'infection par VIH. Ces compositions peuvent empêcher la réplication du virus VIH, empêcher la formation de souches virales qui résistent au traitement aux benzimidazoles, empêcher ou retarder l'infection des cellules par le VIH et retarder la réapparition du virus dans des cellules traitées. Ces compositions sont également efficaces contre l'hépatite et certains virus tels que celui de l'herpès, de la grippe, et les rhinovirus.
