The invention provides a hydromet-allurgical process for treating metal-containing sulfide ores and concentrates, comprising reacting said metal-containing sulfide with concentrated sulfuric acid at a temperature of between about 300 °C and 400 °C in the presence of oxygen to produce a solid metal sulfate product and a gaseous product which is primarily SO3, wherein said metal is selected from the group consisting of iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and manganese. Said metal sulfate product is then leached with dilute sulfuric acid to form a metal-containing solution, from which the metal values are separated by precipitation at raised H2SO4-concentrations obtained by saturating the solution with the gaseous SO3 from the sulfatization reaction step.

L'invention concerne un procédé hydrométallurgique relatif au traitement de minerais et concentrés sulfurés à teneur en métal, qui consiste à conduire la réaction entre un sulfure à teneur en métal et de l'acide sulfurique à une température comprise entre environ 300 ·C et 400 ·C en présence d'oxygène, pour donner un sulfate de métal solide et un produit gazeux (principalement SO¿3?), le métal pouvant être fer, cuivre, zinc, nickel cobalt et manganèse. Le sulfate de métal est ensuite soumis à une lixiviation à l'acide sulfurique dilué pour donner une solution à teneur en métal, puis les métaux précieux sont séparés par précipitation à des concentrations élevées en H¿2?SO¿4? résultant de la saturation de la solution avec le SO¿3? gazeux issu de la phase de réaction de sulfatation.
