This invention concerns the hemihydrogenation of dinitriles into corresponding aminonitriles. Specifically, the invention concerns a process of hemihydrogenation of aliphatic dinitriles into corresponding aminonitriles using hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst chosen from among Raney nickel, Raney cobalt, Raney nickel including a doping element chosen from among the elements of groups IVb, VIb, VIIb and VIII of the periodic table of elements as published in the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (Weast, 5th edition of 1970-71) and zinc and Raney cobalt including a doping element chosen from among the elements of groups IVb, VIb, VIIb and VIII of the periodic table of elements and zinc, and a strong mineral base derived from a alkaline or alkaline-earth metal, characterized in that: the initial hydrogenation medium includes water (at least 0.5% by weight relative to the total fluid compounds of the said medium), diamine and/or aminonitrile capable of being formed from the dinitrile to be hydrogenated, and untransformed dinitrile (representing for the three compounds 80 to 99.5% by weight of the total fluid compounds of the said medium); the rate of transformation of dinitrile may reach 95%; and the said process makes it possible to obtain at least 60% selectivity in targeted aminonitriles.
