The refractive surgery keratotomy knife (21) has a handle (23) with a foot plate (27) with an opening (29) for receiving a surgical blade (31). The foot plate (27) is adapted to be placed against the cornea of the eye by being pressed directly into the cornea tissue. The cutting edge (CE) of the blade (31) is located at an acute angle or parallel to the bottom of the foot plate (27) either due to the design of the blade (31) or with the use of an adjusting mechanism of the knife (21). In one embodiment the blade of the knife is flared.
