Disclosed is a method of making .beta.-polypeptides. The method includes polymerizing .beta.-lactam-containing monomers in the presence of a base initiator and a co-initiator which is not a metal-containing molecule to yield the product .beta.- polypeptides. Specifically disclosed are methods wherein the base initiator is potassium t-butoxide, lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (LiN(TMS)2), potassium bis(trimethyl-silyl)amide, and sodium ethoxide, and the reaction is carried out in a solvent such as chloroform, dichloromethane, dimethylsulfoxide, or tetrahydrofuran.

L'invention concerne un procédé de fabrication de ß-polypeptides. Ce procédé consiste à polymériser des monomères contenant ß-lactame en présence d'un initiateur de base et d'un coinitiateur qui n'est pas une molécule contenant du métal, afin d'obtenir les ß-polypeptides produits. Plus spécifiquement, l'invention concerne des procédés dans lesquels l'initiateur de base est du t-butoxyde de potassium, du lithium bis(triméthylsilyl)amide (LiN(TMS)2), du potassium bis(triméthyl-silyl)amide et de l'éthoxyde de sodium, et dans lesquels la réaction est effectuée dans un solvant tel que du chloroforme, du dichlorométhane, du diméhylsulfoxyde ou du tétrahydrofurane.
