A method of producing a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (NDCA) from its dialkylester is disclosed. The process comprises heating the dialkylester at a temperature of from about 70 to about 350°C in a solvent comprising a monocarboxylic acid having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms in the presence of an esterification catalyst and isolating the NDCA so produced. The monocarboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic acids, wherein the aliphatic and alicyclic acids contain no multiple carbon-carbon bonds. The process according to the invention produces a high purity product which is suitable, for example, for producing liquid crystal polyester resin.
