Compounds of general structural formula (I) wherein A represents a 5- or 6-membered heteroaryl group containing at least one heteroatom selected from the group consisting of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur; and use of the compounds and salts and solvates thereof, as therapeutic agents are disclosed. In particular, the invention relates to carboline derivatives which are potent and selective inhibitors of cGMP-specific PDE.
