A wheel load sensor (10) designed to be installed in a recess in the surface of a roadway and used for the selective detection of the vertical directional component of a pressure emanating from a wheel load; said sensor comprises a piezoelectric measuring element (11), a conductor acting as an inner electrode (12) and a hollow conductor (13') acting as the outer electrode and serving to define a measuring axis, which is necessary for the selective directional detection of the pressure, by clamping wall sections (16) of the piezoelectric measuring element oriented approximately parallel to the plane of the road surface, while the remaining wall sections (16') of the piezoelectric measuring element are arranged in the hollow conductor (13') at a distance from the other walls of this conductor. In the installed position, the measuring axis, which coincides with the clamping axis (P), is oriented perpendicular to the surface of the roadway. Since the wall sections (16') of the piezoelectric measuring element (11) located at a distance from the hollow conductor (13') are oriented approximately transversely to the measuring axis, this design substantially eliminates the transmission of horizontal pressure components from incoming pressure waves to the piezoelement (11).
