A unit (1) for use in a vehicle is interrogated and identified by a fixed interrogator (2). A wireless form of communication is established between the unit (1) and interrogator (2) to permit transfer of data to the unit (1). As well as appropriate communication circuitry (12) and an identification store (19), the unit (1) includes processing of the incoming data by a microprocessor (32) to provide an audio signal for energising a loud speaker (36) in the unit (1) to provide a sound output for the vehicle occupants. The unit is powered by internal batteries (22, 38) to be usable even when the vehicle ignition is turned off. The unit (1) is made self-contained to be mounted wherever convenient. The principle can be extended to providing data to control a visual display in the unit (1). The unit (1) may be provided with a user-interactive input such as a keypad (48). A radio link is described but other wireless means of communication are feasible.
L'invention concerne l'interrogation et l'identification d'une unité (1), destinée à s'utiliser dans un véhicule, par un interrogateur (2) fixe. Une communication sans fil s'établit entre l'unité (1) et l'interrogateur (2) pour permettre un transfert de données à l'unité (1). Outre un ensemble de circuits (12) de communication approprié, et une mémoire (19) d'identification, l'unité (1) comprend un microprocesseur (32) de traitement des données entrantes destiné à émettre un signal audio d'activation d'un haut-parleur (36) dans l'unité (1) afin de produire une sortie sonore destinée aux occupants du véhicule. L'unité est alimentée par des batteries (22, 38) intérieures, ce qui permet de l'utiliser même lorsque le dispositif d'allumage du véhicule est éteint. L'unité (1) est autonome, ce qui permet de la monter à tout emplacement approprié. Le principe peut s'étendre à la fourniture de données pour commander un dispositif d'affichage dans l'unité (1). L'unité (1) peut comporter une entrée d'interaction avec l'utilisateur telle qu'un clavier (48). L'invention décrit une liaison radio mais peut concerner d'autres moyens de communication sans fil.
