In a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary cell according to the present invention, a particular redox shuttle is contained in an electrolyte, whereby a overcharge of the cell is effectively prevented. The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary cell comprising a negative electrode composed of a metal material containing lithium as a primary component or a carbonaceous material into which lithium can be doped and from which lithium can be dedoped, a positive electrode composed of a composite oxide of lithium and transition metal, and a non- aqueous electrolyte containing an organic compound of the general formula: (see formula I) where X represents a halogen atom.
