An occupant restraint system is disclosed in which a determination on the actuation of the system is made by a simple calculation. A first feature value is extracted from a first component of acceleration caused by an external force exerted on a vehicle in a first direction, the first feature value representing a first vector of the external force with respect to the first direction. A second feature value is extracted from a second component of the acceleration in a second direction, the second feature value representing a second vector of the external force with respect to the second direction. A magnitude and a direction of a synthesized vector is obtained by synthesizing the first vector and the second vector. A projective magnitude of a projective vector is obtained from the synthesized vector, the projective vector being a vector which is a projection of the synthesized vector with respect to a predetermined direction. Actuation of the restraining means is determined by comparing the projective magnitude with a predetermined threshold value so that the restraining means is actuated when the projective magnitude is greater than the predetermined threshold value.
