A mattress core having a plurality of holes therein features edge reinforcement members inserted into holes adjacent to the perimeter of the mattress core. Each edge member is made of a foam material having a greater firmness than the foam material of the mattress core body surrounding it in order to prevent sagging of the mattress edges due to exposure to repeated sitting. The edge members can be inserted about the entire perimeter of the core, or along any combination of edge portions, as increased firmness may not be desirable in all areas, for example at the head end of the mattress where sitting is less likely to occur. In one embodiment, a second row of edge members is provided inward of the row directly adjacent the perimeter. This second row is more compressible, or less firm, than the first, providing an incremental increase in firmness towards the edge.
