A method of friction stir welding comprising positioning a monomer between aluminum or aluminum alloy surfaces at a location at which friction stir welding is to be performed. The monomer is selected to cure without substantial damage at the temperatures reached during friction stir welding. At least portions of the surfaces are friction stir welded together through the monomer to form a welded joint and to form a corrosion barrier sealant resisting the intrusion of moisture by capillary action adjacent the welded joint between the surfaces by at least partially polymerizing the monomer.

Un ensemble (10), tel qu'un organe d'aéronef, est formé à l'aide d'un joint soudé, par exemple au moyen d'un procédé de soudage par frottement et mélange (FSW) qui permet de former un joint à recouvrement entre un élément raidisseur (14) et la surface intérieure du revêtement de l'organe (12). Une couche (24) de matériau d'étanchéité, tel qu'un matériau d'étanchéité/adhésif monomère, est appliquée sur les surfaces à assembler et est traitée sur place grâce aux températures élevées du procédé de soudage, de manière à former un joint étanche à surface de recouvrement élastomère, tel qu'un revêtement d'élastomère fluoré, destiné à protéger l'organe (12) contre la corrosion aux soudures (16, 18). On peut appliquer pour mettre en oeuvre le traitement de la chaleur supplémentaire par laser (30) ou par chauffage (30) par induction ou analogue.
