ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION Novel .gamma. isoforms of retinoic acid receptor protein and DNA segments encoding the novel isoforms are disclosed. Chimeric receptor DNA sequences and proteins are also disclosed. The chimera are constructed by exchanging domains or DNA regions between receptor proteins or receptor DNA sequences of the invention and from other receptor proteins and DNA sequences of the steroid hormone superfamily of receptors. Methods are also disclosed for screening for agonist or antagonist substances of the .gamma. receptor effector system and in particular a method for identifying ligands which are capable of binding to a .gamma. isoform of retinoic acid receptor protein is also disclosed.
