A device (90) for controlling the weight of a body (10) comprises a passive or expandable member (92). The expandable version of the member (92) includes an expandable (110) and a non-expandable portion (100) to its exterior surface. The member (92) is selectively expanded and/or contracted following implanted within the abdominal cavity (80) to provide pressure to the abdominal cavity (80), thereby restricting food intake without physically invading the abdominal cavity (80). The expandable version of the member (92) is expanded and/or contracted following implantation to vary the amount of pressure provided to the abdominal cavity (80). The member (92) is preferably positioned superficial to the fascia (60), muscle (50), peritoneum (70) and abdominal cavity (80) of the abdominal region (20) according to the method of the present invention to minimize the risks associated with traditional food intake restriction surgeries.
