Devices for the repair of a defective cardiac valve are provided. A regurgitant mitral valve (2) having an annulus (4), an anterior leaflet (6) and a posterior (8) can be repaired with the disclosed device. The mitral valve (2) can have Type II valve dysfunction with substantial prolapse (3) of the A2 segment of the free margin of anterior leaflet (6) above the plane of the annulus (4) as a result of ruptured chordae (18). Device (70) has both a proximal end (72) and a distal end (74) configured for fixation to the valve (2) or subvalvular tissues of the papillary muscle (16) to repair this defect.
