Steam reforming of natural gas or other combustibles and CO after purification are included in the novel compact steam reformer (1). Controlled catalytic CO purification is obtained by means of careful temperature control on the after- reactor (37, 39, 39a). Temperature control is made possible by pressure- controlled operation of the evaporator (24).
