An alternate method of applying a coating of hydroxyapatite onto metal is to electrodeposit brushite first and then convert the brushite coating to hydroxyapatite. The conversion may be accomplished by immersing the brushite coating in a conversion liquor until the transformation to hydroxyapatite is complete. The conversion liquor preferably consists of: (i) water that is as pure as practically attainable (that is ASTM Type 1 grade), (ii) potassium hydroxide in order to raise the pH to about 9, and (iii) a desired concentration of carbonate ions.
