The present application discloses a novel method for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Further disclosed is an approximately 230 kDa protein and the use of such protein in detection assays for Staphylococcus aureus and in other diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
