A remote meter reading system (10) includes a remotely accessible meter interface unit (12). The meter interface unit (12) is operable in an acti- vated mode and in an inactivated mode. The meter interface unit (12) is periodically activated to mon- itor a communication channel to detect whether there is communication activity (410). When com- munication activity is detected (430), the meter in- terface unit (12) is operated in a message monitor- ing mode to monitor the communication channel (450, 460). When a message addressed to the me- ter interface unit (12) is detected during the moni- toring period (470), the meter interface unit (12) is placed in an activated mode for an extended time period to process communication signals (485). If no communication activity is detected when pe- riodically activated (430), or if no message ad- dressed to meter interface is detected during the monitoring period (470), the meter interface unit (12) is placed in an inactivated mode (440).

Un système télé-afficheur de mesures (10) comporte une interface (12) accessible à distance. Celle-ci (12) est exploitable en mode activé et en mode inactivé. Périodiquement, l'activation de l'interface de mesures (12) permet de rechercher dans un canal de communication une éventuelle activité de communication (410). En cas d'activité de communication (430), l'interface de mesures (12) bascule en mode recherche de message au niveau du canal de communication (450, 460). Si pendant la période de surveillance (470), il y a détection d'un message destiné à l'interface de mesures (12), cette dernière bascule en mode activé pour une période suffisante au traitement des signaux de communication (485). S'il n'y a détection d'aucune activité de communication pendant les périodes d'activation (430) ou d'aucun message destiné à l'interface de mesure pendant la période de surveillance (470), l'interface de mesure (12) bascule en mode inactivé (440).
