ABSTRACT A manually operated railroad car handbrake release system in which the release of the handbrake (12,112) at either end of a car (10,11) automatically causes release of the brake (12) at the opposite end of the same car. Affixed to each handbrake unit is a hydraulic cylinder (21,121) with interconnecting hydraulic lines (25,26). Brake releasing actuation at one handbrake unit pressurizes the hydraulic system so that the cylinder (21,121) affixed to the brake unit at the opposite end of the car is also actuated to release the brake (12,112) at that end. Return springs (22,122) disposed about the cylinders piston rods (19,119) automatically return the release handles (16,116) and pistons (20,120) at both ends to their non-actuated positions. The brake release system does not include provision for resetting the brakes, and each brake mechanism must be individually manually operated to set its associated brake.
