A lithium ion battery having, as a negative electrode, a composition comprising a molybdenum bronze. The molybdenum bronze may of the formula A xMoO3 .epsilon.(H20) where A is selected from the group consisting of at least one of sodium and lithium and x is in the range of 0.20 to 0.30, and .epsilon. is not greater than 0.1. Alternatively, molybdenum bronze may be of the formula A xMoO3, where x represents a number exceeding 0 and not exceeding 0.5, preferably not exceeding 0.3, with A being selected from the group consisting of a monovalent metal, preferably Li and Na: a divalent element, preferably Fe, Sn, Pb, Ge: a trivalent element, preferably V, Fe, Bi: as a tetravalent element, preferably Si, Sn, Pb, Ge: and a pentavalent element, preferably V, Sb. The composition of molybdenum bronze preferably additionally comprises carbon and an organic binder. The battery has an electrolyte of an ionic lithium compound.
