ABSTRACT A compression release mechanism for an internal combustion engine type having a combustion chamber, an intake valve and an intake valve lifter, an exhaust valve and an exhaust valve lifter, and a rotatable camshaft including a camshaft gear and inboard and outboard camshaft lobes fixed thereto. A centrifugally activated movable member is disposed at the outboard side of the outboard camshaft lobe and rotatably engages the camshaft. The movable member includes a slot formed therein and a lifting surface adapted to engage one of the intake or exhaust valve lifters. The lifting surface of the movable member is adapted to engage one of the intake or exhaust valve lifters. A retainer including a guide pin for slidably engaging the movable member is provided at the outboard side of the movable member and rigidly engages the camshaft.
