A method and apparatus for characterizing gastrointestinal sounds include a microphone array (12) to be positioned on a body for producing gastrointestinal sound signals. The signals are digitized and their spectra and duration is determined by a processor (30). A characterization as to the state of the gastrointestinal tract is made on the basis of the spectra and duration of the sound or event.

Cette invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de définir les caractéristiques de sons gastro-intestinaux, lesquels font appel à un réseau de microphones (12) que l'on place sur le corps de manière à produire des signaux sonores gastro-intestinaux. Les signaux sont ensuite numérisés, leurs spectres et leurs durées étant déterminés par un processeur (30). Il est ainsi possible de définir les caractéristiques de l'état des voies gastro-intestinales à partir du spectre et de la durée d'un son ou d'un événement.
