This invention is a power control system and method that controls a power generator (50) to vary the duty cycle of a power output provided to a delivery instrument (10) for delivering that power to a site in a patient for ablation. The peak power can be raised and the duty cycle lowered to result in deeper lesions. A power output having a higher peak power for producing deeper lesions can be obtained by using a lower duty cycle having a longer "off" period in order to deliver more power to the ablation site without overheating the delivery instrument (10). The temperature of the delivery instrument is monitored, and the duty cycle is lowered when the temperature exceeds a predetermined maximum limit. After the instrument has cooled sufficiently, the duty cycle is then increased to its previous level.
Système de commande de puissance et procédé permettant de commander un générateur (50) de puissance pour modifier le cycle de fonctionnement d'une sortie de puissance se trouvant dans un instrument (10) qui permet d'administrer ladite puissance à un site chez un patient en vue d'une ablation. La puissance de crête peut être élevée et le cycle de fonctionnement raccourci, ce qui entraîne des lésions plus profondes. Une sortie de puissance présentant une puissance de crête plus élevée permettant de produire des lésions plus profondes peut être obtenue au moyen d'un cycle de fonctionnement raccourci à période de mise hors tension plus longue afin d'administrer une puissance plus élevée sur le site d'ablation sans surchauffer l'instrument d'application (10). La température de l'instrument d'application est surveillée et le cycle de fonctionnement est raccourci lorsque la température dépasse une limite maximale prédéterminée. Une fois l'instrument suffisamment refroidi, le cycle de fonctionnement est alors ramené à son niveau précédent.
