A user-administerable customer identification record is provided at a secure server ( or "gate-keeper"). The user-provided information is authenticated by protected telephone company provided information that is displayable together with the user-provided information to called terminals. The authenticated information may be displayed to a properly equipped called terminal from a call originating from a computer terminal, a voice over Internet equipped telephone or a POTS telephone. Customer identification data may include audio or video elements employing such bandwidth as the server allocates either by encapsulating the message in-band using an existing communications protocol or out of band employing an unused TCP port, for example.
