Process for conversion of methane in higher hydrocarbons. With this invention, a catalyst, made up essentially of a transition series metal and a support consisting mainly of the oxide of a refractory metal are exposed to a methane flux at a temperature of between 100 and 300 degrees C for at least a second, and to a hydrogen flux at a temperature of 100 to 300 degrees C for at least a second. This process is of particular interest in chemical engineering applications.
