The fire-retardant material may be positioned in an article adapted to be installed in an opening in a fire-rated, structure. It retards the transmission of heat and flame from a fire through the article and the structure opening, so as to enable the fire rating of the structure to be substantially the same with or without the structure opening and article therein. It further is adapted to be molded and encapsulated in a composition for sealing all side edges, to retard the aging and degrading process, and to protect against damage from high humidity and evaporation. It further includes substantial interior space to enable full expansion during exposure to increasing heat and flame from a fire.

Matériau résistant au feu pouvant être placé dans un article conçu pour être installé dans l'ouverture d'une structure ayant un classement de résistance au feu. Le matériau résistant au feu retarde la transmission de la chaleur et des flammes à travers l'article et, par conséquent, à travers l'ouverture de la structure, ce qui permet à la structure de conserver essentiellement le même classement de résistance au feu qu'elle soit dotée ou non de l'ouverture dans laquelle se trouve l'article.
