Ammonia production is increased in an ammonia plant having a primary reformer, a secondary reformer and an air compressor, where the primary reformer and/or the air compressor is operating at its maximum capacity, without investing to expand the capacity of either. A portion of the feed can bypass the primary reformer and enter the secondary reformer directly. Oxygen and nitrogen streams are added separately and independently to form an ammonia synthesis feed gas. Methane concentration in the outlet stream from the secondary reformer is controlled by manipulating the oxygen stream. Nitrogen concentration or a H2:N2 ratio in the ammonia converter feed gas is controlled by manipulating the nitrogen stream.

Il est possible d'accroître la production d'une usine d'ammoniac comportant un compresseur d'air, un premier reformeur, et un deuxième reformeur dont le reformeur primaire et/ou le compresseur d'air fonctionnent à leur capacité maximale sans à avoir à investir pour en augmenter la capacité. A cet effet une partie de l'apport peut contourner le premier reformeur, et entrer directement dans le deuxième. Des courants d'oxygène et d'azote sont ajoutés séparément et indépendamment pour former le gaz d'apport servant à la synthèse de l'ammoniac. La concentration en méthane dans le courant de sortie du deuxième reformer se règle en jouant sur le courant d'oxygène. La concentration en azote ou le rapport H¿2?/N¿2? dans le gaz d'apport alimentant le convertisseur d'ammoniac se règle en jouant sur le courant d'azote.
