An apparatus and method for measuring a bond strength of a carton to reinforcement tape bonded thereto, the apparatus comprising a support post mounted on a base, and having two horizontal support rails welded to an upper end of the post. A pivotal lever arm is positioned horizontally beneath the support rails, and supports a weight which is able to move along the lever arm, the arm also having a clamp assembly at a distal end thereof. A threaded rod is positioned generally alongside the lever arm and, and has a movement plate placed thereon, which can engage the rear of the weight on the lever arm. The rod has a crank handle, which can be turned to move the plate into engagement with the weight and push it along the lever arm until the weight forces the lever arm to pivot downwardly, tearing the tape from the carton. Measurement markings on the apparatus can then be used to calculate the force required to separate the tape from the carton. To test a carton sample, a portion of reinforcement tape is peeled away from the carton so as to form a strip, which is placed between the rails. The strip is then clamped by the clamp assembly, and the handle is turned to move the plate into engagement with the weight and push it along the lever arm until the tape is torn from the carton, and the force measured.
