A configurable multi-protocol serial-to-ieee802.15.4 mesh network gateway router is an apparatus that is made up of: a microprocessor; a serial connector such as RS485 or RS232; a RF chip such as IEEE802.15.4 radio chip; a LCD to display configuration parameters; a non-volatile memory to store program and the configuration parameters; a plurality of push buttons to configure the configuration parameters; a program stored in the memory cause the microprocessor to set up wireless mesh link with other apparatus, to receive serial data through serial connector and send out the destination of the data through RF, to receive wireless data through RF designated to it and send out through the serial connector, or to receive wireless data from RF and route to another apparatus through RF. A method to configure the configuration parameters is also disclosed. The invented apparatus are used to provide immediate over-the-air mesh links to replace the wired link between existing controller and remote devices in industrial automation networks.
