A method of operating a portable navigation device (PND) or navigation system is described, together with a computer program for implementing said method and a PND and navigation system capable of carrying out that method. The method includes the steps of providing a means by which a user can identify a specific location or location range on the surface of the earth, which may include the current location of the device or navigation system, and at least temporarily storing said location or range in memory. The method is characterized in that it includes the further steps of presenting to the user a plurality of user-selectable options each indicative of a plurality of transient phenomena, the selection of one or more of which results in the association of that or those phenomena with the identified location or range and the storage of such together therewith as primary information. The method is further characterized in that the primary information is transmitted, either wirelessly or over a physical connection, to a remote device after storage thereof. The transient phenomena may be at least one of phenomena which are likely to have an impact on current or future traffic flow and movement towards, at, and in the vicinity of the particular location or range specified, and phenomena which may be of interest to other device users whose current or future route may pass through or proximate the particular location or range specified. In the former case, the transient phenomena are one or more of traffic congestion characteristics and/or details, accidents and details thereof, thoroughfare diversions, closures and restrictions including road works and repairs, current local weather conditions, and extraordinary vehicle identifications such those being particularly wide, heavy or slow, among others.
La présente invention concerne un procédé de fonctionnement d'un dispositif de navigation portatif (PND) ou d'un système de navigation, ainsi qu'un programme informatique pour exécuter ledit procédé et un PDN et un système de navigation capables d'exécuter ce procédé. Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à fournir un moyen permettant à un utilisateur d'identifier un emplacement spécifique ou une zone d'emplacement sur la surface de la planète, pouvant comprendre l'emplacement actuel du dispositif ou du système de navigation, et stocker au moins temporairement en mémoire ledit emplacement ou ladite zone. Le procédé est caractérisé en ce qu'il comprend les étapes suivantes consistant à présenter à l'utilisateur une pluralité d'options sélectionnables par l'utilisateur indiquant chacune une pluralité de phénomènes transitoires, la sélection d'une ou plusieurs de ces options entraînant l'association de ce ou ces phénomènes avec l'emplacement ou la zone identifié et le stockage de ceux-ci avec les phénomènes en tant qu'informations principales. Le procédé est en outre caractérisé en ce que les informations principales sont transmises, soit sans fil soit via une connexion physique, vers un dispositif distant après avoir été stockées. Les phénomènes transitoires peuvent être soit des phénomènes susceptibles d'avoir un impact sur le flux de trafic actuel ou à venir et sur le mouvement en direction, au niveau et à proximité de la zone ou de l'emplacement particulier spécifié, soit des phénomènes qui peuvent présenter un intérêt pour d'autres utilisateurs du dispositif dont l'itinéraire actuel ou à venir peut passer par ou dans les environs de la zone ou de l'emplacement particulier spécifié. Dans le premier cas, les phénomènes transitoires sont un ou plusieurs des éléments suivants : caractéristiques et/ou détails d'encombrement du trafic, accidents et détails de ceux-ci, déviations, fermetures et limitations de route, notamment des travaux et des réparations sur les routes, conditions météorologiques locales actuelles et identifications de convois exceptionnels, comme ceux particulièrement larges, chargés ou lents, entre autres.
